Pulp, fibres, ink marks.
The morning dew on the artisan’s fingertips, the sigh of the knife as it slices through the bark of the paper mulberry, and the silence of an ancient sheet of paper that has slumbered for a thousand years.

Papermaking encapsulates the paper-making heritage of Tengchong, Yunnan, within its scent.
The top notes of paper mulberry and green leaves wash over you—the damp morning air of the Gaoligong Mountains, the sap of plants clinging to the artisan’s fingertips as they gather ‘willow-mulberry’ branches from the hills;
The heart notes of romarin and vetiver weave the rhythm of fibres unfurling in water, whilst the subtle bitterness of chrysanthemum seeps in quietly—much like the moment when pulp slowly takes shape upon a bamboo screen: quiet, slow, yet bearing the millennia of writing and faith from this frontier town;
In the base notes, paper, ink and ambergris settle gently; this is the lingering scent of ancient, yellowed paper, the echo left by unwritten passages and names never recorded in history as time passes.
Transforming the fibres of a tree into fragrance, and bringing the faint glow of an intangible cultural heritage back to the tip of the nose, is our gentle response to tradition, as well as an experimental exploration of the idea that ‘culture can be smelled’.
